::Al-Zafaraniya is one of the largest cities in the capital, Baghdad, in terms of area and population. Its population is estimated at about 650 thousand people in 2010. It is located southeast of Baghdad at the meeting point of the Tigris and Diyala rivers. It is considered the main southern entrance to the city of Baghdad, as it is located on the main road linking Baghdad to the southern governorates. Al-Zafaraniya is one of the areas of Baghdad that contains several groups of Iraqi people and is famous for its beautiful orchards. It is bordered to the south by the Doura area on the western bank of the river, and is bordered to the northeast by Al-Rashid Camp, which was previously called Hunaidi Camp during the time of the British occupation. There is still a cemetery for British soldiers at The northern entrance to Zafaraniyah. This camp is one of the largest camps in Baghdad before 2003, as it included Al-Rashid Air Base, aircraft repair factories, the Army Aviation School, Al-Rashid Military Hospital, the largest military hospital in Iraq, the Medical Affairs Directorate, the Infantry School, the Special Forces School, and the Military Discipline Directorate. It has now turned into an abandoned place. It was completely destroyed, and buffalo breeders randomly took it as their homes. To the south of Al-Rashid Camp, Al-Zafaraniya borders the complex of the First Military College, the Staff College, and the Air Force Hospital. Near this complex there are residential homes for teachers and teaching staff at the college, and it is considered a part of the city of Al-Zafaraniya. In addition to the presence of commercial centers in it that contain a group of scientific centers, the most important of which is the Baghdad Institute of Technology ( Which was formerly the American University and was called Al-Hikmah University), the Technical Management Institute, the Institute for the Preparation of Industrial Trainers, the Baghdad College of Technology, and the College of Applied Arts. Al-Zafaraniyah includes one of the most important industrial areas in Baghdad, which specializes in various industries, including electrical, food, and petrochemical industries. Located in the southwestern part of the city, along the Tigris River, are the Electrical Industries Company, the Electronic Industries Company, the Crescent Electrical Industries Company, the National Paints Company, the Pepsi and 7-Up factories, the Iraqi Meat Factory, and the National Beer Factory, “Farida.” So much so that the people of the city call the street leading to the industrial zone “Farida” Street. “The Hero” due to the presence of an advertising billboard for a unique company in the shape of a beer bottle, “Batal, as the Iraqis call it,” at this former intersection, which was Al Rabie Street. Adjacent to the industrial zone is the Al-Nidaa General Mold Facility, which was one of the largest military manufacturing facilities in Iraq previously. It also includes the Mold and Welding Institute, as well as the Al-Zawraa General Facility for the manufacture of electrical systems and wire mesh. It contains the old electric power generation station (South Baghdad station), in which 6 new generating units were installed after 2003, and the General Company for Plastic Industries is located next to it.
